All individuals at Queen Elizabeth Elementary School have the right to learn, work and play in a positive and secure environment. Everyone, including staff and students is expected to contribute to this atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation. In order to ensure that we all have access to this climate, the following unacceptable behaviours will be dealt with immediately by staff members. These also apply to the bus and to any activities related to school whether or not the behaviour occurs on school grounds.
Hands-Off Policy at Queen Elizabeth
Any unwanted physical contact is not permitted at the school, including play-fighting.
Harassment
As per the W.Q.S.B. Safe Schools Policy, harassment of any kind (physical, sexual, psychological) is not permitted at the school.
Non-compliance with Staff Requests
Teachers and other staff are responsible for maintaining discipline and safety standards throughout the school. If a staff member makes a request of a student, the student must comply immediately.
Inappropriate Language and Gestures
Offensive, abusive language or inappropriate gestures are not permitted.
Disruption of Learning
Disruption of classes, activities, assemblies etc., will not be tolerated.
Destruction of Property
Everyone is to respect school property and the property of others. Willful destruction, defacing or vandalism of property is not permitted at Queen Elizabeth.
Dress Code
There is no official school uniform. However, students should dress in a manner that does not detract from the learning climate of the school. Specifically, students are required to remove all caps, hats, toques, etc. in the school and are to remove all outerwear before entering the classroom. Students must wear indoor shoes in the school at all times if possible. The school reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of student attire. If clothing is deemed inappropriate, students will be asked to change.
Principal’s Discretion
Other behaviour may be of a more specific nature and such examples will be dealt with by the school principal.
Consequences
Consequences will be applied in order to correct the behaviour of individuals engaging in this conduct. We believe the main goal of discipline is not to punish. It is to teach. Although these are school-wide rules, the classroom teacher may have additional policies in class. Appropriate consequences will be applied depending on the nature, severity and frequency of the behaviour.
Electronics/Toys/Headphones/Cellphones
Electronics are not permitted to be used on school property for personal use.
If a student is caught using an electronic for personal use:
• First Offence – If a student is caught with their electronic device, the device will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the day.
• Second Offence – If a student is caught with their electronic device, the device will be confiscated, and a parent/guardian will have to pick the device up from the office.
• Repeated Offence – possibility of a range of consequences at the discretion of the principal or principals designate. Toys are not to be brought to school. If a student brings a toy to school, it will be confiscated until the end of the day and returned upon the day’s completion. Should a student require a tool or comfort item for support, the teacher will devise a plan with the student and parent which supports learning and does not distract from learning. The teacher will communicate the tool’s use with all staff
